How the California Fire Foundation and CERV Aid Monterey County Farmworkers Affected by Winter Storms

Posted by Sarah Blackstone on

In the aftermath of the tragic winter storms of 2023, the resilience of Monterey County's agricultural community has been tested like never before. The Community Emergency Response Volunteers (CERV) of the Monterey Peninsula, with the generous support from the California Fire Foundation, has taken critical steps to aid the backbone of our local economy: the farmworkers and their families.

May 2023 marked a pivotal moment for CERV, as we received a grant from the California Fire Foundation. This fund empowered us to provide financial assistance directly to those severely impacted by the winter storms. The relentless weather conditions, coupled with the catastrophic impact of the Pajaro levees breaking, necessitated a swift and coordinated response.

Partnering with rooted organizations like Mujeres en Accion, Special Kids Connect, Pajaro Valley Prevention and Assistance Program, and the Monterey County Community Foundation, CERV was positioned at the forefront of the relief efforts. Together, we distributed aid to farmworkers facing evacuations, loss of income, and displacement from their homes.

Our united effort transcended immediate relief, focusing equally on empowerment through education. The community was educated on disaster preparedness, accessing relief services during crises, and recovery methods post-disaster. These collaborative engagements enhanced the community's ability to navigate through the adversity posed by natural disasters.

Farmworkers, who tirelessly contribute to our county's agricultural success, warrant our support in their time of need. The grant from the California Fire Foundation and the work of CERV and its partners underscore the commitment we share in ensuring that these fundamental members of our community are not left to fend for themselves.

The journey to recovery continues, but through our collective actions and the heartening support of organizations and individuals alike, hope remains a sustaining force. Let us continue to stand in solidarity with our Monterey County farmworkers as they rebuild their lives and fortify against future adversities.

The California Fire Foundation's grant and our community's response serve as a testament to the power of unity in times of hardship. As we persevere through these challenging times, let us hold fast to the belief that together, we can overcome and emerge stronger.
